Strengthening Patient Support Groups Across Region 3

The Patient Support Group (PSG) gathering brought together PLHIV community members, advocates, and partner organizations across Region 3 for an afternoon of connection, reflection, and collective action.

The program opened with a warm welcome centered on three simple but powerful affirmations: everyone is seen, valued, and embraced. Participants were reminded that they are more than numbers, cases, or medical records—they are individuals with stories, strengths, hopes, and dreams. The gathering also emphasized the importance of creating a safe and inclusive space where everyone can feel accepted without fear of judgment.

Speakers highlighted the power of unity and collective action in advancing the rights and well-being of people living with HIV. The gathering served as an opportunity to renew the call for stronger, more active PSGs across Region 3, recognizing that a collective voice can create greater impact in advocacy and community development.

One of the most meaningful moments was the sharing of personal experiences. A participant shared his journey of resilience, challenges, and growth while living with HIV, reminding everyone that an HIV diagnosis does not define a person's future. His story encouraged others to see their experiences as a journey toward hope, confidence, and empowerment.

The discussion then focused on the current situation and future direction of PSGs in the region. Several groups shared their accomplishments, challenges, and plans for rebuilding. Some PSGs are newly established and working to strengthen participation, while older groups are seeking to regain momentum following years of inactivity. Across these different experiences, a common need emerged: stronger leadership, consistent engagement, mentorship, and sustained community support.

LAKAN reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening PSGs through regular meetings, technical assistance, policy advocacy, and support for proper organizational registration. The organization also committed to pursuing clearer policies within OHAT to promote transparency, consistency, and fairness in the implementation and use of incentives.

During the interactive “Hope, Love, and Joy” activity, PSGs reflected on their aspirations, purpose, and unique identities. Participants expressed hopes for a regional PLHIV summit, regular Learning Group Sessions, stronger PSG meetings, and more opportunities for community-building. They also emphasized their role in inspiring fellow PLHIV, protecting rights, raising concerns, and promoting dignity, equality, and access to services.

The gathering concluded with an HIV trivia activity, recognition of active participants, and a call to sustain the momentum created during the meeting.

More than a meeting, the gathering became a reminder that strong communities are built through connection, shared responsibility, and collective action. As PSGs across Region 3 continue to rebuild and grow, the commitment remains clear: no one should have to walk the journey alone.

Together, we strengthen support. Together, we amplify our voices. Together, we move forward.
